On Sunday, August 24, 2014, Maggie Johnson and Brittany Dys, both incoming seniors at Hanna-Elk Mountain-Medicine Bow High School and 2014 Girls State delegates, were invited to speak to the American Legion and American Legion Women’s Auxiliary Post #64 about their experiences last June at the 72nd annual American Legion Auxiliary Girls’ State. Girls’ State is a week-long program designed to give outstanding high school juniors hands-on experience in the mechanism of government. The program was held this year on the Northwest College at Powell campus. The week is organized as a facsimile of the United States legislative, judicial, and executive branches from the city to the state level. Johnson and Dys were chosen and sponsored by Post #64 to attend Girls’ State because of their outstanding academic and extracurricular records. After a luncheon of sandwiches and salads, Johnson and Dys gave a joint presentation, outlining their eye-opening education in practical workings of democracy. They also showed pictures, sang some amusing songs, and heartily thanked Post #64 for their educational opportunity.
