Win-Win at Home Basketball Game

HEM basketball

Both the boys and the girls HEM Miners basketball teams dribbled, passed, and shot their way to victory against the Rock River Longhorns last Friday evening on 2/23/2014, much to the enjoyment of the large home crowd cheering them on at the HEM gym. The boys won their contest 44 to 38, and the girls won 43 to 27. Unfortunately, the road did not treat the boys as well as the girls the next day in Farson. The boys succumbed to the Pronghorn 58 to 49, but the Lady Miners prevailed 42 to 36 in Farson, extending the girls’ winning streak to ten games. The Lady Miners are now tied with Lingle-Fort Laramie for first place in the 1A Southeast division with 19 points each (unofficial stats). They have ten wins and three losses this season. As of 1/20/15, the HEM girls rank third in the state’s 1A teams in team rebounding and fourth in team defense. Haley Clark is tenth in the state for individual rebounds, and Cheyenne Tomkins ranks fifth for steals.

Haley Clark scored 12 of the points against the Rock River Longhorns with 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 6 steals. Maggie Johnson made 11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Darby Bowen produced 10 points. Her sister, Shelby Bowen, made 2 points and leaped for 7 rebounds. Brittany Dys made 4 points on layups. Cheyenne Tomkins, Cheyenne Hunter, and Ellen Kenneda all had 2 points each.

In the boys’ win against the Longhorns, Celsey Meyer scored 12 of the points with 10 rebounds. Jake Sutter came up with 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Trevor Rice made 8 points, Christian Gonzales 7 points, Jarrett Neimark and Jason Nowak 4 points each. Unfortunately, the starting point guard, Wyatt Phillips, injured his ankle right before halftime and was out of the game.

In the Saturday game up in Farson, Maggie Johnson was the Lady Miners high scorer with 10 points. She robbed the Lady Pronghorns for 7 steals. Haley Clark made 7 points and snatched 10 rebounds. Cheyenne Tomkins put in 7 points and Shelby Bowen 5 points and 3 assists. Cheyenne Hunter and Brittany Dys both had 4 points and Darby Bowen made 3 points. Ellen Kenneda contributed 1 point on a free throw.

Being on the road without their starting guard, Wyatt Phillips, out with an ankle injury, did. not help the Miners against Farson Saturday in the 58 to 49 loss. By the end of the first quarter, they had allowed a 20 to 3 lead. It was an uphill slog from there. Trevor Rice scored 12 points. Jake Sutter put in 10 points and blocked 3 shots. Christian Gonzales scored 7 points and Jarrett Neimark made 6 points and leaped for 7 rebounds. Celsey Meyer made 6 points and 8 rebounds, Jiel Matthews 6 points, and Aaron Scott 4 rebound.

The HEM basketballers had hosted Encampment the previous Tuesday, January 20th. That evening, the Lady Miners won a close game in overtime, 34 to 32. Maggie Johnson made 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. She was 6 for 6 from the free throw line. Haley Clark contributed 8 points and Shelby Bowen 6 points and 8 rebounds. Brittany Dys added 6 points and 6 rebounds, Cheyenne Tomkins 2 points, 4 steals, 7 rebounds, and Darby Bowen 2 points.

In the home game against Encampment on Tuesday, the HEM boys were down 22 points early in the third period but battled back to within 3 points by the end of that quarter, scoring 16 in a row. However, it wasn’t enough, and the Miners lost 50 to 60. Wyatt Phillips was the HEM high scorer with 14 points. Jake Sutter came up with 11 points and 7 rebounds, Celsey Meyer 7 points, and Jiel Matthews 7 points and 4 rebounds. Jarrett Neimark had 5 points and 8 rebounds, Trevor Rice 4 points, and Aaron Scott and Christian Gonzales 1 point each.

The Miners play their next games on the road in Encampment, Glendo, and Rock River. The next home game is a rematch with Farson on Saturday, February 7, 2015, at noon, 1:30, and 3:00.
