Jump Aboard

If you want to be one of the people who make the decisions that affect our day-to-day life here in Hanna, you don’t have to run for office; you can volunteer for a Board. The Town of Hanna has openings on various Boards and is looking for volunteers. The Town of Hanna Boards are established by town code to take care of the operations of various areas of public life and to provide planning and recommendations to the Mayor and Town Council.

The Planning and Zoning Board should have five members, and it has three openings. The Planning and Zoning Board has been established to make recommendations to the town council concerning land use, zoning, and development issues. The Town of Hanna is hoping for members who would consider reviewing the existing town codes and advising the council if there is a need to modify them.

The Carbon County Economic Development Board also needs a member from Hanna. It is not a Town of Hanna Board; it is a nonprofit corporation consisting of representatives from various towns around the county, a county commissioner, and six to seven at-large positions.  Most of the at-large members are representatives of industries or companies.  The board is working on business retention/expansion, business recruitment, workforce and housing issues. The Board meets on the first Monday of the month at 5 p.m. at various locations around the county.  Meetings last about 2 hours.  Terms are for 3 years.

Recently at the January 14th meeting, the Town Council accepted Mindee Sutter’s application for a seat on the Recreation Board. The Hanna Parks and Recreation Board now has the full complement of five members. According to town code, this Board is charged with “the purpose of advising the governing body of the Town of Hanna as to operation of the town parks and recreational facilities so as to promote the physical and mental well being of the community, as well as providing for the day-to-day operation of the Hanna Recreation Center, recreation programs, town parks and other recreation facilities within the Town of Hanna.” This Board meets on the first Wednesday of each month. The term of a Board member is three years. Congratulations to Mindee Sutter.

Applications can be picked up for these volunteer board positions at the Town Hall. The application has to be approved by the Town Council. Vivian Gonzales can help you with any questions at the Town Hall or call her at 325-9424.

If you want to make a difference in our town and serve our community, this is a good opportunity to jump aboard.
