Senior Maggie Johnson, setter for the HEM Lady Miners volleyball team, was picked the 1A Southeast Player of the Year for 2014, based on her play at regionals and during the season. Her teammates, senior Shelby Bowen, junior Chloe Tolbert, and junior Haley Clark also were selected for the 1A all conference team. Johnson was also chosen for the 1A All State team despite the elimination of the Lady Miners at regional competition. All conference and all state teams are chosen based on a vote by the coaches at the regional and state competitions.
HEM head volleyball coach Jackie Jones said, “I feel Maggie Johnson was most deserving of the honors she has earned this season. From conference coaches to coaches around the state, they spoke on behalf of Maggie and highlighted her work ethic and positive attitude on the court. I feel Maggie represents HEM as a true picture of a student-athlete. Maggie was one of 56 girls on the all-state ballot this season who was chosen for her honor.”
