Speech and Debate Season Begins

The Carbon County School District #2 speech and debate season is about to begin. This year the school district is offering bus travel to practices and meets from H.E.M. in Hanna and from Saratoga and Encampment. Help continue the legacy of the state champions and spotlight the talents of young people in Hanna, Elk Mountain and Medicine Bow.

Home school students may also participate once forms are completed and requirements are met. The CCSD#2 season will begin with a series of organizational meetings the first and second week of November.  The season’s practices will run Monday through Thursday and competition travel will typically take place Friday and Saturday.  Although the team competes as a group, individual practices often require an appointment with a coach. Practices run from 4:00 pm  to 6:00 pm and can run until 7:00 pm when scheduled by appointment. In fact, a tutor is available by appointment to assist team members with homework. H.E.M. students have often traveled to Saratoga to join other team members from Encampment and Saratoga.

Volunteers to the sponsorship of the program are always welcome. Volunteer forms can be found on the school district web site or may be obtained at school offices. Volunteers are a crucial support to speech and debate. Volunteers meet volunteer requirements as indicated on the volunteer form submitted to the district central office. When acting as a volunteer, members listen to speeches and give feedback to team members regarding their presentations.  Volunteers support goals of the school district speech team and encourage community support of the team by attending group practices and team events. Volunteers are to be recognized throughout the speech season which runs from November to March and extends with special events  featured in May and Nationals in June.
